There is more than enough Wal-Mart humor to go around

Especially when my son and I shop together, Wal-Mart humor is the order of the day. During the summer of Year 2000, we took just such a trip from our remote mountain home to the Wal-Mart in Helena, Montana, a distance of some 45 miles one way. I seldom left the land, so this was a big event.

Fred hates to shop, typical man, but Zachary and I were having a blast. My husband was 57 at the time, I was 49, and Zach was 15. Let me set the scene just a little: Fred looked younger than his age, but he's a full sized guy at nearly six feet in height and around 180 pounds. Also, he's eight years older than I am, but in much better health.

Now for me: I'm tiny, five feet tall and about 95 pounds. While athletic in my day at a professional level, my being both small and young at heart fools a lot of people.

That left Zach, a lean mean growing machine of fifteen, a typical teenager except that, being my son, he's the BESTEST.

We were in Wal-Mart for about two hours, spent a bunch of money, nothing wasteful, and finally got our two loaded shopping carts lined up at the checkout counter. That's when it happened.

Wal-Mart Humor At The Checkout Counter
Copyright 2008 by Pamela Baker

We were going through checkout at the end of the trip
Fred was signing off on his credit card slip
Zach and I were kidding each other like a couple of kids
When the young girl behind the counter up and did what she did

With her attention on my husband, while she looked him in the eye
She smiled and asked him if that was all his kids wanted him to buy
She assumed he was our Daddy and that I was Zachary's sis
Fred was doubled up in laughter while he signed the credit slip

At first I felt quite awful; so did the girl at checkout then
But Fred was so amused he laughed and then he laughed again
Last year another incident occurred at another Wal-Mart
When the checker thought it was my GRANDPA pushing that old cart
Fred still loves to tell the world he must be all the rage
If strangers think he's married to a woman less than half his age!

Publisher's note: Pam doesn't really like to talk about herself, much, but we both agreed that for her About Us page, Wal-Mart Humor was the story that simply had to be told.

Thanks for reading,

Fred
