Unintentional humor can be the most hilarious of all
We all laugh when Jay Leno reads headlines. But the unintentional humor fairy has many forms. Have you seen a sign that didn't come out quite the way the sign maker intended?
Spotting a miscue can quite literally make my day. I'm always watching for signs and omens, anyway. For example, there was one fine October day in Houston in 1975. I'd made a couple of mistakes that could have meant real disaster.
And...I...was...down.
Wandering around downtown on that fine, sunny Sunday, I did need to find a place to have lunch despite being all gloomy. Everything seemed to be closed, though. Then, finding yet another locked restaurant door, I turned around to walk up a flight of steps to the street.
A huge sign on the wall pretty much jumped out at me.
GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT
Oh sure, it was no doubt an ad for a credit card or something. Who cared? I sat down on the steps and cried with relief and joy, the knowingness that there were forces in the Universe that cared about me and had handed me this message.
That story is just so you know: I'm ALWAYS looking out for Messages... and MOST of the BEST ones come out as Unintentional Humor. Like a sign seen in a bank parking lot in Rapid City, South Dakota, around 1992.
Now, some critters can park about anywhere, like the cheetah in Gerry Legere's great photo.
But humans, especially city humans, don't have that luxury. If we don't park in a designated area, our rides get towed. Our bank at that time was a small one with an even smaller parking lot.
Worse than that, they were repaving about half of it. Obviously, the following sign was meant to discourage non-customers from parking in the lot. However, the unintentional humor fairy strikes again:
Apparently, if you were NOT a customer, you got really GOOD parking.
I mentioned this to several bank employees, but of course they didn't get it.
You did, though, didn't you? And we're betting you've seen other unintentional humor bits that are WAY better than that one.
