Talent Scouts And Preschool Humor Ought To Go Together
Practically any toddler could interest a preschool humor talent scout on occasion, but some are just naturally comedic all the time. Although I obviously was not present to record his track record as a wee one, there is reason to believe my father, Elvin M Baker, may have been such a child.
We were told by older family members (before they left this Earth) that Elvin (Dad)spoke not a word for the longest time. It presented an image of a two-year-old mute. When he DID finally getting around to uttering recognizable words, however, he didn't start with just one.
He started spitting out complete sentences.
As an adult World War II veteran and western Montana rancher, he could tell a story that could take all day. That fact, coupled with a few others, makes me wonder: Was he silent for so long as a preschooler simply because he was figuring out his stories? Hmmm....

Creation Of A Storyteller
A Tribute To Elvin M Baker
Copyright 2007 by Fred Baker
He grew up tough and he grew up hard
Right before World War II
By three he was walking out in the yard
By four he was bossing a crew
There wasn't that much the grown man couldn't do
If you doubt it, just ask him yourself
The wildest stories ever told turned out to be true
Maybe he really was a real elf
But, you know, it all started way back before school
When he started spitting sentences out
By the time he could talk he was nobody's fool
He really knew what it was all about
He's walk four miles to school one way
When he grew up old enough to go
But long before that he could talk his way out
He was anything but mentally slow
Even when his mother wanted him to tell a tale
Of how a brother or a sister was bad
He could beat around the bush so long she'd give it up
Forgetting why she'd even been mad
As the oldest of eight he assumed the role
Of protecting children younger than he
Every brother and sister learned to trust big bro
In every tough emergency
So when your little ones start to tell tall tales
And you wonder if you ought to clamp down
Remember Elvin M and the benefit he got
By knowing how talk a parent down
Sure, a child growing up needs to know about the price
The horror that dishonesty brings
Yet never underestimate a talent early learned
For talking yourself out of things
